What is the Highest Paying Job in Life Science?

A Managing Director/General Manager in life sciences will enjoy the top end of yearly salary rates. At a junior level, a managing director or general manager can expect to earn between £110k to £135k, with those at an experienced or senior level receiving salaries ranging from
£135k to upwards of £180k per year. 

In the UK, the majority of people in this role work within London, where there are around 1,691 individuals with this job title. This is followed by Bristol, Manchester, and Leeds, where there are an average of 228 life sciences managing directors in each region. 

The gender split for this role is 51% male to 49% female, with each individual to have an expected tenure of around 2.6 years, before moving on to a different company. 

As the managing director/general manager of a life science company, your expected objectives will likely be as follows:

The life sciences sector has experienced tremendous growth, particularly following the Covid-19 pandemic. As an industry, it is expected to expand by a minimum of 7% by 2028, which will equate to around 19,667 additional jobs available for life sciences professionals by
that time 

For example, if we examine the role of Head of Engineering in life sciences, there has been a yearly rise of more than 43% for individuals moving into this role in 2022, with the expected salary for this title is between £60k to £80k, or between £80k to £110k for a senior head of
engineering.

Toxicologist / Senior Toxicologist Salary 2023

As a toxicologist in 2023, you can expect to earn between £40k to £50k for a junior role; £50k to £70k as an experienced member, and between £70k to upwards of £100k+ as a senior toxicologist.

There is currently a gender split of 43% to 57% in favour of women for this role, with an expected tenure of around 2.5 years on average before individuals will move on to a new employer.

Nationally, there has been a rise of 4% for people moving into this role between 2021 and 2022, with London currently employing the largest number of workers in the UK, totalled at 1,663 people.

Market Access Manager in Life Sciences Salary 2023

Market Access Managers can expect to earn between £75k and £95k per annum, with a senior member of staff earning between £95k to £120k for the year 2023

There is currently an even gender split of 50% for this title, with most members enjoying an average tenure of 3 years before moving on to a new employer.

London currently employs the most individuals in this role, at around 73 members, which is then followed by Manchester, Bristol, and Leeds.

As the market access manager, it is expected that your objectives will be:

  • Set/execute market access, repayment and pricing strategy of product portfolio.
  • Create a budget for required resources.
  • Maintain relations with the Transparency Board, Public Health Commission, thought leaders, patient associations, MHRA and Department of Health.
  • Negotiate the price of medicines with the MHRA.
  • Adhere to the regulatory standards and the healthcare environment.
